Make sure to enter the VIN of the vehicle you are working on when downloading the software update. The software is specific to the year and trim of the vehicle. If the wrong software is installed, the audio unit will be damaged and will need to be replaced. Units damaged by improper updating are not covered by American Honda. The solution was to switch the unit from English to French (remember the screen is in English in the bad state). The screen will switch to French. Now while it was in French I actually used the voice commands (in my bad French) and it worked. Switch back to English and it works in English. Just before 5:00 pm (left car there 9:30 am), was told car ready. They charged up the battery for an hour and auto start/stop worked after; tech did not find anything wrong with voice command. Went in and was told $69.00 for charging the battery and diagnostics; voice command working fine.
